in the 17th century archibald douglas, earl of forfar, built a palladian mansion near bothwell castle (wherefore he dismantled parts of bothwell castle), the mansion is demolished in 1926. Does any one know where i could find pics or more on the history of the mansion.

GordonWell as far as the history of the mansion goes, you have it. Nothing remarkable happened there, and there is nothing much more to tell that I haven't said already in my entry in IC on Bothwell....see the passage of ownership of the estate until Historic Scotland took over. It was demolished specifically because of subsidence due to coal mining, and there remain a few large portions of walling marking the boundary of the very exclusive
( a few famous footballers live there, and others did before)housing estate which now occupies the site. As for pictures, unfortunately I don't have much time to visit anywhere these days...even though Bothwell is virtually next door (5mins by car) but there are one or two. They occasionally crop up on postcards titled 'Bothwell Castle', with the real castle in the background. Where are you based? The Motherwell Heritage Centre has a variety of pics in their reference library...though I suspect you're not based any where near it!
ipflowell i am based in the netherlands, so unfortunately i can't easily come to that library, but thx for the info.
GordonI've no doubt that I'll be back there at some point, but I can't make plans at the moment. It might be a long wait, but when I'm there I'll get what I can.
